Punta Gorda Treasury Department

The Accountant General’s Department in Belize was established in the year 1829. The Treasury falls under the portfolio of the Minister of Finance. The Accountant General is the responsible office of the Ministry of Finance for the accounting arrangements in all Ministries and Department of GoB.

The Main office of the Treasury is located in Belize City at the Central Bank Building. There are Sub-Treasuries in Corozal, Orange Walk, Belmopan, San Ignacio, Punta Gorda, Dangriga and San Pedro.

The Finance Officer at each Substation acts on behalf of and at the direction of the Accountant General.

Treasury Functions

The core responsibility of the office of the Accountant General is as follows:

1.       To see that a proper system of accounts is established in every Ministry and department of the Government.

2.       To see that proper arrangements are made for the safe keeping of all public monies, stamps, securities, and valuable financial documents.

3.       To call the attention of the Ministry of Finance any apparent extravagance or of any apparent defect in the provision for a charge owing to the exhaustion or absence of a vote.

4.       To supervision the receipt of public revenue and exercise general supervision over the expenditure and other disbursements.

5.       To manage the General Ledger

6.       To exercise supervision over all the officers of his department entrusted with the receipt or expenditure of public money, and over the sub-accountants, and to take precautions, by the maintenance of efficient checks, including surprise inspections, against the occurrence of fraud, embezzlement, or carelessness.

7.       To render the accounts for audits and to prepare the financial statements and returns.
